The Region

The Dordogne river valley area is full of hills and valleys, forests, pleasant countryside, bold exposed rocks, gorges, caves, rivers and chateaux.   Once you reach this wonderful area the countryside and climate change at once for the better.   If you could take the Cotswolds of England, make the similarly coloured buildings bolder, less twee yet older, sandwich the land into a much more hilly relief, add long range views, forests and rivers where none exist at home, balmy heat and sunshine, enlarge the area ten-fold and introduce chateaux at every corner you will begin to get close to understanding what makes this general region of France such an attraction.    All in the magical atmosphere and cuisine that is France where the sea and beaches are quite redundant.    And the area boasts some of the best red wine in the country at economic prices that will make you envious back home.

The villa is a few miles from the river Dordogne in the southern end of the department known as the Correze.      Although the source of the river is many miles to the north east the region is sometimes called the Upper Dordogne valley.   The area here is generally a little higher yet similar to the wider region, more wooded but far less populated - in particular by other English owners and visitors for the present.     We much prefer this, as do most of our visitors who prefer to soak up the genuine French atmosphere away from the anglicised element and the crowds of Sarlat which is downstream.    Less than half a mile from the villa is the acclaimed beauty spot known as Roche de Vic from which the views are magnificent.

It was only after touring the world many times over that I finally concluded that France and Italy (right on our own doorstep) were the only places I would choose to buy a holiday home.  Nothing has changed my mind since but the region has the added advantage that you can reach it by car from any French port in a single day on roads that carry nothing like the volumes back home.     I hope you, like myself, will have many happy memories of this enchanting part of the world.
